Bliss - Domaine Weinbach Pinot Blanc
Domaine Weinbach Pinot Blanc 2023
I am not normally a fan of Pinot Blanc as I usually find it too bland. However at my one-on-one tasting session last year with Eddy Faller, the wine maker at Domaine Weinbach (Alsace), tasting his Pinot Blanc was a revelation and highlighted what a beautiful wine this grape variety could make. When I spotted some bottles of his 2023 Pinot Blanc in one of my favourite wine stores, I couldn’t resist bring a couple of bottles home with me.
My first sniff of this wine gave me savoury, herbal, green grape, delicate yellow floral and peach skin aromas.
On the palate, subtle nectarine and yellow peach flavours were underpinned by fresh garrigue – that savoury herbal element – and green grapes. Flavours of yellow plum and a whiff of coriander then emerged.
There is a lot of texture in the mouthfeel of this wine – yellow peach skin coming through and matching with the aromas. A dry wine, it was beautifully balanced and had excellent fruit concentration, purity as well as complexity. The finish of this wine was long and made me linger over the glass of wine while I soaked up the last rays of sunshine while I gazed over Sydney Harbour from the rooftop garden.
This wine screamed to me of late summer going into autumn. It would pair brilliantly with sauteed potatoes and vegetables, pork (this is very Alsatian), and Thai dishes such as massaman curry or red chicken curry as the texture and dryness of the wine would cut through food with oily elements.
