Italian Alpine Wines
When an Alpine Wine tasting came across my radar, my first thought was Italian wines and I had to go along and taste some of the grape varieties I had studied, as well as reacquainting myself with wines from Alto Adige – an area that I have cycled and sipped my way through. There were the expected Nebbiolos from Valtellina, some very dry and crisp whites from Valle d’Aosta and a smattering of Franciacortas. However my favourite wines of the tasting were from Alto Adige.
Tiefenbrunner Turmhof Pinot Nero 2023
I am a fan of Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) from Alto Adige as I usually find the wines elegant and ethereal. After the reduction blew off, this wine had a beautiful cherry nose. Raspberry flavours joined the cherry along with concentrated cranberry before morphing into a savoury finish. This wine was smooth, with fresh bright, fresh clean fruit. I liked.

Tiefenbrunner Turmhof Lagrein 2022
A grape variety that I love drinking, especially in wines from around Bolzano (as this one was). My first impression was a full smooth black wine with dark plum and black cherry. Florals, in particular violet and violet leaf made an appearance and were underpinned by dark bitter chocolate on the back palate.
