Christmas is Champagne - Part3
Another family Christmas occasion – this is what happens when you are in a blended family - which meant yet another Champagne was sampled. This time I brought out a bottle of Bollinger Special Cuvee – a last minute purchase on Christmas Eve when I got told to “bring a bottle” and my normal “reasonably priced” – think under AUD 100 go-to champagnes - had sold out from the fine wine shop. It was interesting comparing it one day apart from the Louis Roderer Collection.
My first impression was of subtle citrus with flavours of lemon, white grapefruit, grape and lemon pith. Biscuit notes then gently wafted in but were barely perceptible and it was a challenge to distinguish other flavours. The bubbles were fine but disappeared within 10 seconds in the mouth. There was limited length on the finish and the mouthfeel was light.
This was a very understated champagne with less flavour intensity and complexity than the Louis Roderer Collection – in fact I found it a bit bland. I must confess that my preference is for the Louis Roderer Collection which had way more character and presence, and it will continue to be one of my go-to Champagnes for family gatherings.
