German Riesling … I indulged
I went to a Riesling wine tasting where 11 of the 19 Rieslings were from Germany – what a great opportunity for a German Wine Scholar student …. and I indulged.
Donnhoff Niederhauser Klamm Kabinett Riesling 2023
This Riesling from Nahe was definitely at the upper end of residual sugar for a Kabinett. It was brimming with juicy white peach flavours and had a lovely round mouthfeel. Beautifully balanced with the acidity supporting the sweetness and good fruit concentration. This wine would go really well with Asian food with strong flavours (I am thinking of a sweet and sour pork, and dishes with lots of ginger and garlic) as there would be a good intensity match between the food and the wine. A couple of bottles came home with me.

Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 2023 (Mosel)
There were two JJ Prüm wines on offer and definitely the best wines in the line-up. My favourite was the Wehlener Sonnenuhr – from a Grosse Lage aka Grand Cru vineyard.
Despite being a Kabinett, the Wehlener was off-dry with the residual sugar giving a roundness in the mouth. You knew there had to be high acidity in this wine as the palate was fresh. Peaches, pears and honeysuckle were all prominent flavours but beautifully integrated and supported by some light grey smooth stone elements. A beautifully balanced wine and a delight to drink. The price prohibited some bottles following me home.
This wine that would pair beautifully with Asian dishes and also sauteed chicken.
