The Season to be Riesling
It seems to be the season to be drinking Riesling – well it is late summer in Sydney – and so I went along to a Riesling tasting with a friend. For something different, the wines were mainly from Germany and Austria and we both agreed on our favourite two wines.
Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2023 (Germany)
An ethereal wine that displayed delicate stone fruit, white florals, mandarin and a hint of pear. It was beautifully balanced, incredibly smooth and silky, with a long finish that kept on lingering on the palate. Dry in style, it was very quaffable and great to drink on its own or with delicate light food. Only the price point stopped a few bottles coming home with me. Our favourite wine of the tasting.

Gobelsburg Heiligenstein Riesling 2022 (Austria)
The initial impression of this wine was peach and soft white blossom. Then the green fresh herbal backbone of the wine emerged along with flavours of fresh green leaves – something I find quite typical of a lot of Austrian wines. Well balanced and refreshing. Would pair beautifully with a chicken salad.
