Six Metres Matters

I had the opportunity to do a wine tasting with the wine maker of Domaine Goisot. The domaine is located in Saint-Bris in Bourgogne – an area mainly known for producing Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris.  While I loved their La Ronce Blanc 2020 (Sauvignon Blanc and Gris), the most interesting part of the tasting was a comparison of two 2021 single vineyard chardonnays. The wines were so different despite identical vinification and the vineyards being only 6 metres apart.

Côtes d’Auxerre Gueules de Loup Blanc 2021

On the first sniff I was immediately hit with aromas of butter, honeycomb and caramel - a beautifully aromatic wine.  These aromas translated through to the palate with a touch of mandarin in the background.  The texture was buttery, round, rich and smooth.  This wine is not what I was expecting from a Chardonnay but I really liked it.  It would pair beautifully with bread and butter pudding.

Rating: Delish             Price: AUD 90

Côtes d’Auxerre Gondonne Blanc 2021

This wine was more subdued and displayed a slight green background with herbal and lemon taste - chervil.  Minerality came through on the palate with white stone, talc and chalk and underpinned by quiet acidity.  This wine was much more like a traditional Chablis in taste and structure.

Rating:  Delish       Price: AUD 90

The Gueules de Loup was immediately the more seductive of the two wines with its full aromas and smooth rich mouthfeel.  It did however get more muted in the glass after warming up.  The Gondonne is the better structured wine and will age better.  My personal preference for drinking is for the Gueules de Loup.
