Henschke Johann’s Garden 2006

I love a good Grenache and my last bottle of Henschke’s Johann’s Garden 2006 has been tucked away for a while.  Given that it is now 20 years old, I couldn’t resist opening it to see how it tasted and evolved.

The first taste had waves of dates and prunes crashing through my mouth.  As the wine opened up, black plum, bay leaf, violet, tarragon, dried tomato leaf, graphite, oak, black olive, black ink and a touch of cigar appeared. Dried raspberries and cranberries joined the party later.

This wine was incredibly smooth, round, full, and complex in the mouth.  There was a touch of cigar lingering on a very long finish and just a wee touch of tannic grip on the back palate to add to the textural complexity.

What amazed me was that after 20 years, it still has a touch of brightness.  Naturally I had to have another glass to confirm what I was tasting.
