Pole Dancing
Quintado do Sil Godello 2023 (Valdeorras DO)
I recently popped into a wine store where they were doing a tasting of staff favourites. The most popular wine of the night – and I agreed – was the Quintado do Sil Godello 2023 from Valdeorras DO.
Aromas of white peach, yellow flower, sweet lemon, iceberg lettuce and faint whiff of dried oregano and thyme assailed my nose. When I tasted it, I got flavours of white peach, slightly under-ripe nectarine, grape, thyme, dried oregano and rosemary. This wine was crisp which gave this wine its backbone and structure, with the stone fruit and dried herbs twirling around a pole like a pole dancer. White and yellow florals came in before a surprising long savoury finish. It had some weight but was not heavy, and had a good roundness-crisp balance.
This Godello was definitely more of a quaffer rather than a fine wine but that didn’t stop it being enjoyable to drink.
Would pair well with summer and lighter winter dishes such as a peach salad with sauteed chicken, a chicken salad, seafood or a chicken casserole with white wine, oranges, olives and herbs. It would also go well with a porchetta roast that is heavy on the herbs.
