Deep in the Woods - Deep Woods Estate

Margaret River - a place where cows once roamed but now there are vineyards. I was in the region for a few days catching up with an old uni friend and doing what one must in this part of the world: hopping between cellar doors.

Our first cellar door was Deep Woods Estate.

2025 Single Vineyard Albariño

We began with the 2025 Single Vineyard Albariño, an unexpected find in this region. Native to Spain’s windswept Galcia, Albariño seems perfectly at home here in Margaret River’s maritime climate. This was a refreshingly dry and balanced wine with an underpinning of acidity but not as screaming as in Spanish Albariños. Notes of pear, sea spray, apple and under-ripe nectarine. It doesn’t shout its variety but is a perfectly drinkable wine and would pair well with seafood. My friend took a bottle home for her husband to sample.

2025 Estate Rose

This rose was a surprise packet for me. Made entirely from Tempranillo (there seems to be a Spanish grape variety theme here), it was very dry, the acidity bright and mouthwatering, and had the signature tempranillo chalky tannins that are felt in the cheeks. Flavours of fresh strawberry without the cream. This wine is an easy summer quaffer.

2022 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

The star of the lineup. Notes of mulberry, black plum and blackberry were met with hints of tarragon, cocoa and soft talc. On the palate the tannins were soft and woven into the wine, giving a full mouthfeel. Even my friend, who usually steers clear of Cabinet Sauvignons, declared this to be her favourite of the nine wines we tasted.
