Park me at Howard Park

I have had Howard Park on my “must visit” list for ages. Their Cabernet Sauvignons have been a bit of a go-to for me when dining out in Perth - always the perfect match with a good steak. So when I finally found myself in Margaret River, I booked in for their Icon Wine Flight tasting. As the name suggests, these are not your everyday wines - but oh, they were worth it.

2023 Howard Park Allingham Chardonnay

Initially tasted alongside the 2023 Marchand & Burch Mount Barker Chardonnay, the Allingham revealed its true character gradually. At first the palate was taut and lime-driven, disguising its complexity. As the wine breathed and warmed, it expanded into a full expression of Margaret River elegance. Layers of concentrated white peach, nectarine and subtle caramel emerged, underpinned by delicate oak integration. The mouthfeel was very smooth and round. The evolution in the glass was remarkable, rewarding patience with complexity and finesse. I was completely smitten.

Rating: Bloody Delish Price: AUD 110

2007 Howard Park Cabernet Sauvignon

This was the kind of Cabernet Sauvignon that reminds you why you fall in loved with aged wine. It was beautifully structured and redolent of secondary and tertiary notes. The nose hit me with cedar, cigar box and a touch of leather. As it opened up, dried figs, prunes and the unmistakable Margaret River eucalyptus note appeared. The tannins were as smooth as talc. I closed my eyes to the price and bought a bottle on the spot to share with my friend during in our Margaret River trip

Rating: Outstanding Price: AUD 175

If you ever find yourself in Margaret River, make the detour to Howard Park. The wines are as refined as their reputation suggests. Make sure to linger - these wines deserve time.
